The Statue of Liberty and Liberty Island were both been evacuated Friday afternoon as a precaution amid security concerns, the National Parks Service said.
The evacuation of the monument began shortly before 1 p.m., parks officials say. A security sweep of Liberty Island is being done.
Tourists visiting the site tweeted photos of throngs of people waiting to leave a pier on Liberty Island.
It’s not clear what prompted the evacuation.
It’s not clear whether ferry service to Liberty Island has been affected.
