Study Finds New Yorkers Driving Dangerously Fast

sca.jpgNew York is known for its fast pace, but a new study released today shows many drivers across the five boroughs are driving dangerously fast.

According to a study by Transportation Alternatives and Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer, 39 percent of the 15,000 drivers surveyed were found to be driving above the 30 mile per hour speed limit on city streets.

In the Bronx, 32 percent of drivers on Webster Avenue at 195th Street were speeding past a school. One driver was clocked at 66 miles an hour.

In Brooklyn, 88 percent of drivers on Rogers Avenue at Maple Street were speeding, with 25 percent traveling faster than 40 miles an hour.

According to the study, 70 percent of drivers on East Houston Street and Avenue C in Manhattan speed through a school zone.

And 32 percent of drivers on Northern and Junction Boulevards in Queens speed past a busy commercial area, a school, and police station.

On Staten Island, 39 percent of drivers on Hylan Boulevard and New Dorp Lane were driving above the speed limit.

Researchers say the speeding could have deadly consequences.

According to the report, a pedestrian hit by a car going 30 miles per hour dies 40 percent of the time. At 40 miles per hour, crashes are fatal 70 percent of the time.

  1. How much did it cost the city to take this dumb study?

Anyone with a brain that lives in New ork could have told you for FREE that people in new york drive like animals and have no consideration for slowing down, using signals, turning from the correct lane, not talking on cell phones, using seatbelts, cutting each other off, running red lights, speeding up on yellow lights, double parking, tripple parking……..

Welcome to New York where if you walk to slow or drive at the normal speeds people think your crazy!

  2. 1. As if they didn’t know????

    2. As if one is able to move at the speed limit (did I recall someone holding that cars going on the BQE on hol ha-moed sukkos need to have a sukkah so the passengers can fulfill the mitsvah of sleeping in a sukkhah….)

  3. A WORTHWHILE READ ON THIS TOPIC:

Jack took a long look at his speedometer before slowing down: 73 in a 55 zone.
Fourth time in as many months. How could a guy get caught so often?

When his car had slowed to 10 miles an hour, Jack pulled over, but only partially. Let the cop worry
about the potential traffic hazard. The cop was stepping out of his car, a big pad in hand. John? John from the health club? Jack sunk farther into his trench coat. This was worse than the coming ticket. A cop catching a guy from his own club. A guy who happened to be a little too eager to get home after a long day at the office. A guy he was about to play golf with tomorrow. Jumping out of the car, he approached a man he saw twice a week during their workouts, a man he’d never seen in uniform.

“Hi, John…….. Fancy meeting you like this.”
    “Hello, Jack…..” (No smile)
“Guess you caught me red-handed in a rush to see my wife and kids.”

“Yeah, I guess.” He seemed uncertain. Good.
“I’ve seen some long days at the office lately. I’m afraid I bent the rules a bit -just this once.”
Jack toed at a pebble on the pavement. “The wife something about roast beef and potatoes tonight.
Know what I mean?” “I know what you mean. I also know that you have a reputation in our precinct.” Ouch. This was not going in the right direction. Time to change tactics. “What’d you clock me at?”
“Seventy. Would you sit back in your car please?” “Now wait a minute here, John. I checked as soon
as I saw you. I was barely nudging 65.” The lie seemed to come easier with every ticket.

    “Please, Jack, in the car.”

Flustered, Jack hunched himself through the still-open door. Slamming it shut, he stared at the
dashboard. He was in no rush to open the window. “Anti-Semite cop”, he thought to himself.

The minutes ticked by. John scribbled away on the pad. Why hadn’t he asked for a driver’s license?
Whatever the reason, it would be a long time before Jack ever worked out with this cop again. A tap on the door jerked his head to the left. There was John, a folded paper in hand. Jack rolled down the window a mere two inches, just enough room for John to pass him the slip.

“Thanks.” Jack could not quite keep the sarcasm out of his voice.

John returned to his police car without a word. Jack watched him retreat in the mirror. Jack unfolded the sheet of paper. How much was this one going to cost?

Wait a minute. What was this? Some kind of a joke? Certainly not a ticket. Jack began to read:

    Dear Jack,
Once upon a time I had a daughter. She was six when killed by a car. You guessed it-a speeding driver. A fine and three months in jail, and the man was free. Free to hug his daughters. All three of them. I only had one, and I’m going to have to wait until I go to Heaven before I can ever hug her again.
A thousand times I’ve tried to forgive that man. A thousand times I thought I had. Maybe I did, but I’m not too sure. Pray for me at your synagogue. And be careful, Jack, my son is all I have left.

    Your Friend John

Jack turned around in time to see John’s car pull away and head down the road. Jack watched until
it disappeared. A full 15 minutes later, he too, pulled out and drove slowly home, a changed driver, and
upon arriving home, hugged his kids while his surprised wife looked on!

Let’s all try to remember this the next time we think we’re in a rush!
Let’s not rely on ‘Shomer P’soyim….

  4. We make up for our speeding on local streets by our over-compliance on the highways. If they would just switch the posted limits to 30 on the BQE and 55 on Ocean Parkway, we’d never be in violation.

  5. The study was done by “Transportation Alternatives”. Transportation Alternatives, is a group that lives by its name. This was taken from their website: “Transportation Alternatives mission is to reclaim New York City’s streets from the automobile, and to advocate for bicycling, walking and public transit as the best transportation alternatives. They dont take into consideration large families who cannot take the bus. This group has been lobbying the State to allow New York City to install THOUSANDS of speed cameras. This press release has nothing to do with speeding, safe streets, or anything else. This press release is a small group a people trying to change the way we live to their specifications. Just like Mr. Gore and congressional speaker Nancy Pelosi fly exclusively on Private jets while telling us to drive those silly looking foreign Toyota Prius’s
