Police are investigating a vandal attack at the Maronite Christian Cemetery in a Lebanese border community in northern Israel. Many gravestones were damaged and destroyed in the attack.
The site of the attack is the village of Kufr Bur’im, a village whose inhabitants fled months following the establishment of Israel in 1948. Police investigators are not sure of the motive but it is pointed out that in the past year there have been attacks against Christian cemeteries and houses of worship, and the possibility of Jewish extremists being behind the attack is not being ruled out at this time.
During his meeting in Jerusalem with Christian church officials earlier in the week, President Reuven Rivlin stated President Rivlin: “An attack on your holy sites, is like an attack on our holy sites, and such crimes must never be allowed to happen.”
