After over a month underground, Hamas official Dr. Ahmed a-Zahar surfaced on Saturday, seen at Rafiach Crossing in a suit and tie, making his way to Egypt for talks involving a ceasefire in Gaza and a prisoner exchange deal with Israel.

A-Zahar was reported in hiding since 27 December, Operation Cast Lead, and there were rumors that he shaved his beard and fled to Egypt, but this was proven to be inaccurate.

A-Zahar’s inclusion in the talks is viewed as a step-up, since the suited terrorist is closely aligned with the Hamas regime’s military wing. While there is speculation his presence may expedite a deal towards obtaining Shalit’s release, he told the media on Saturday that the ceasefire and the release of Shalit are not connected. A-Zahar on Sunday will travel to Damascus for talks with Hamas leader Khaled Meshal, expected to return to Cairo later in the day with a final decision.

Some of Hamas’ leaders are still in hiding, fearing an Israeli strike, including Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyah.
