Less than one-third of New Yorkers polled were able to identify mayoral candidates Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-Queens/Brooklyn) and City Controller William Thompson when shown their photograph, according to a Daily News survey.
Only 20 of the 100 New Yorkers polled in downtown Brooklyn recognized Thompson. Weiner fared slightly better with 29 – but several New Yorkers also identified him as disgraced former Gov. Eliot Spitzer or New Jersey’s scandal-ridden ex-Gov. Jim McGreevey.
More than half of city voters in a Quinnipiac University poll released last week said they didn’t know enough about Weiner to form an opinion of him, while 69 percent said the same for Thompson.
Only 3 percent said they couldn’t form an opinion of incumbent Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
Bloomberg leads both Democratic contenders in the election campaign, besting Weiner by a margin of 50 percent to 35 percent and Thompson by a margin of 50 percent to 34 percent, according to the Quinnipiac poll.
Only one of the 10 subway riders who took a flyer from Thompson as he campaigned against fare hikes in Herald Square Wednesday knew the name of the former Board of Education president, the Daily News survey found.
Thompson said he wasn’t worried about whether his voters recognize his face – as long as they recognize his policies, he told the News.

New Yorkers are clueless because the mayoral candidates are clueless as to how to solve all of the myriad problems of New York other than tax and spend and tax and spend.
I say let’s make a grassroots coalition and bring back Rudy Giuliani as Mayor. Yay Rudy!!!!!!!!!!!
What does not recognising a photo prove? I doubt I could recognise photos of many people; that doesn’t mean I don’t know who they are.
Most people today are clueless about most of our government leaders and world leaders, geography, politics or current events ;or even history. Some people have such far-out ideas because they never learned anything or paid attention to current events.
Every American has an obligation to be an informed voter. How hard is it to listen to the radio, read a newspaper or follow news online? There’s no excuse!
