Snow Forecast For NYC

weather.gifMost of the Tri-state will wake Tuesday morning to intermittent snow and dropping temperatures.

It was only Monday night that unseasonably warm temps graced the region, but a cold front sliding through the area will provide the conditions for some precipitation.

A Winter Weather Advisory was issued for 9 a.m. Tuesday morning to midnight. The advisory was issued for most of NYC, N.J., and Connecticut.

The intensifying precipitation could have an impact on the evening commute, so be prepared.

CBS 2 HD Meteorologist John Elliot reports: “The heaviest snowfall for us will be on the Eastern tip of Long Island and parts of the Jersey Shore.”

Light snow will pick up in intensity Tuesday afternoon before tapering off later in the evening. 2 to 4 inches are anticipated, with total snow accumulations of 3 to 5 inches expected before the snow eventually tapers off for good.

Temperatures are going to get much colder than Monday’s high of 53 degrees, as Tuesday is expected to reach only the mid-30s and Wednesday the mid- to upper-20s.

Bands of precipitation will pass through the Tri-state Tuesday and Wednesday, bringing light snow, a blustery north wind and highs around the freezing mark.

“In terms of your snowfall accumulations, [Tuesday] morning, we don’t really see too much out there on the roadways,” Elliot says. “[Expect] three to five inches for the east end of Long Island and the Jersey Shore; about two inches to four everywhere else.”

Snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches is possible in New York City, with highs in the 30s.

“What could be troubling on Tuesday evening and for Wednesday morning will be the gusts of winds,” Elliot says. “North winds could be around 15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph…also, with the temperatures dropping rapidly over the next 48 hours, any leftover precipitation could potentially turn to ice and cause hazardous roadway conditions.”
