TA University Stands Behind IDF Officer

The prevalent left-wing sentiment in Tel Aviv University surfaced once again last week in the form of protests against IDF Colonel Penina Shavit-Baruch, a member of the IDF Judge Advocate General’s staff and an expert in international law.

Shavit-Baruch next semester is scheduled to be a member of the university’s faculty as she wraps up her military career, expected to lecture on international law. Despite protests, the dean of the Law Faculty, Prof. Chanoch Dagan, announced she will indeed be joining his faculty next semester as planned.

The university released a statement defending the political, moral and legal views of faculty, “as long as they conform to democratic norms,” further stressing “pluralism is a backbone of the university, which will not buckle under pressure.”

Officials add the university has always made an effort to expose students to a wide array of viewpoints as part of the academic process.
