U.S. stocks climbed for a second day as Home Depot Inc. cut jobs, joining companies that are taking steps to weather the economic slowdown, and Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. beat analysts’ profit estimates.
The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index added 0.6 percent to 836.57, trimming its yearly loss to less than 7.4 percent. The Dow rose 38.47 points, or 0.5 percent, to 8,116.03. The Russell 2000 Index climbed 1.3 percent.
