Gov. David Paterson at a noon press conference officially announced his choice of Democratic Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand to fill the state’s vacant U.S. Senate seat, a day after Caroline Kennedy abruptly withdrew from consideration.
Paterson, with Gillibrand to his right and many of New York’s high powered politicians behind him, introduced the 42-year-old to Albany and the state.
Paterson called it his ‘privilege and honor’ to propel forward the duty of ‘transferring power’ democratically and justly.
“On Tuesday we saw one president replace another, today, again, there is a transfer of power,” said Paterson.
Gillibrand, beginning her second term from upstate New York’s 20th Congressional District, will be named to fill the seat vacated when Hillary Rodham Clinton resigned to become secretary of state in the Obama administration, the aide said. The formal announcement is scheduled for midday Friday.
Some liberal downstate Democrats were upset after the initial news spread of the governor’s choice.
She was considered one of the top contenders in Paterson’s selection process, along with Kennedy and state Attorney General Andrew Cuomo.
Paterson’s appointment lasts until 2010, when a special election will be held to fill the final two years of Clinton’s term.

This wasn’t much of a surprise. Women’s groups were insistent that the nominee be female. Upstate groups have been feeling very alienated lately and were pushing VERY hard for an upstater.
Kennedy um um um um you know you know um, was completely um, unqualified and made a clown of herself on national television. She didn’t bail out to take care of uncle Teddy. Uncle Teddy is a multimillionaire with kids of his own and a staff to take care of him. She bailed because she wasn’t taken seriously.
As far as Andy Cuomo goes… he wants to be Governor.
Gillibrand was the only one who satisfied all of the groups lobbying the Governor. As far as the liberals, they have nothing to say… they’ve already got a Senator.
Like it or not NYC lost out today.
We are desperate for help in many areas.
We need someone to fight for our needs. Dont underestimate how powerful this Senate is.
The community must unite and find the right candidate that will represent our values and our needs.
This is an appointment-
the election is just around the corner.
Register to vote and get ready to stand up.
I wouldn’t say we lost out…
At least New York’s Senate appointment wasn’t tarnished and disgraced like Illinois’ appointment was.
Obviously the desired thing would be to have elections putting people into place, but the law provides for these instances.
We’ll see how she does over the next 2 years.
B”H we finally have a social conservative back in NY politics! She is apposed to “Toeiva Marriage” & is also pro 2nd ammendment!
#3 to clarify-
I said NYC lost out. My best wishes to the designate for success but the city of NY as opposed to upstate lost out on a home town fighter.
Between all of the different Frum communities including Monsey, KY, Square,
5 towns and of course Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, SI etc…we have serious power in numbers when dealing with a statewide office. That being said if we don’t unite and vote as a block for our candidate it will be a great opportunity lost.
The coming elections are for Gov- Senate and more locally – the NYC mayoral seat. These major offices requires the community to register and vote!!!
Its just that simple.
All of the different issues on the table that fill this site and our newspapers, including complaining about different injustices, immigration issues or
allowing the far left to push thru their agenda on moral issues can be addressed and in some case rectified on a large scale by electing candidates that identify and recognize our political muscle and issues.
The alternative is a deteriorating social atmosphere that continues to be unfriendly to religious citizens and their needs i.e
Israel, same gender marriage, tuition assistance, etc…

Askan, so you think it would be right for NYC to have the governor and both senators, as well as every other statewide office? What are upstate people, chopped liver?
