Reports from Washington indicate US President Barak Obama will begin exerting pressure on Israel soon to make concessions to the PA (Palestinian Authority) as the new administration states the president will take a tenacious approach towards achieving Mideast peace. Towards achieving his lofty goal, the newly-elected American leader will be sending his Mideast envoy, George Mitchell, a major advocate of the two-state solution.
Mitchell’s first task will be to oversee a viable ceasefire is observed following Operation Cast Lead in Gaza. The president stated “we have no time to lose,” adding his administration will act aggressively” towards achieving regional peace.
It was Mitchell’s report in 2001 that called for a “settlement freeze” and his policies today are not expected to be any friendlier towards the settlement of Biblical portions of Eretz Yisrael.
