The first Shul has been consecrated in the city of Makeyevka after almost 70 years. From now on, the house at 51 Lva Tolstogo street will be not only a Shul but also a community center for a Jewish community containing two thousand members. Local Jews say the place is very nice and easy to get to. The building is very solid and is located in the center of the city but altogether the place is very quiet and calm.Aside from the synagogue building, the community has its plot and all the houses located in the courtyard. The yard is a perfect place to put up a Sukka while the outer building will become a soup kitchen in the future. The outer building has already been consecrated with a Mezuzah.

The inauguration ceremony was a very dignified event without excessive pomposity. Rabbi Eliyahu Kremer of Makeyevka came out with an introductory speech. Then Community Chairman Alexander-Mikhoel Katz thanked all those who helped the community obtain a house including Chief Rabbi of Donbass Pinchas Vyshedsky.

As they entered the Synagogue for the first time, community members put coins into a tzdaka box for the happiness of the new home. There are already some Jewish books which will turn into a communal library in the future; there is an Aron Hakodesh and a Sefer Torah, there are Sedurim and a prayer hall with a special section for women.

Every man who entered the Shul on this day put on tefillin. The blowing of the Shofar reminded those present of the approaching holiday of Rosh Hashana.

The inauguration ceremony was continued in the ‘Ukraina’ Restaurant and was celebrated with a banquet that featured a kosher feast prepared by the Jewish Community of Makeyevka. Congratulations sounded again including an extraordinary musical performance from the Pirchey Donetsk Boys’ Choir.

Every person who attended this event couldn’t help thinking: the consecration of a synagogue has already changed the lives of Jews in Makeyevka.
