Avreichim Packing Weapons

9mm.jpgAccording to a report released by Ladaat.net, avreichim in the Yechavei Da’as Kollel on Agassi Street in Har Nof, Jerusalem are carrying their weapons in response to current intelligence warnings that kollelim and mosdos torah are being targeted by terrorists.

The kollel is run by Rav Dovid Yosef Shlita, and it is pointed out, that until recently, when Rav Ovadia Shlita took ill, he would give a weekly shiur in the kollel and the Rav Shlita hopes to resume this minhag in the near future.

It should be pointed out that the kollel is taking the security issue seriously in light of recent intelligence reports of threats, and towards improving the situation in Yechavei Da’as, doors are kept locked, and the gates to the premises are now opened by electronic locks, requiring students to know the code. Glass on certain doors has been replaced by stronger tempered alternatives and avreichim are generally more tuned in to security concerns.

According to the report, eight avreichim with licensed weapons have been instructed to bring the weapons to the beis medresh as an added measure of security. Kollel officials the move is in line with instructions received from security agencies.

In line with the concerns, MK Rav Meir Porush has turned to Public Security Minister Avi Dichter, asking him to call for an evaluation of security in yeshivas and kollelim around the country. This follows an inspection made of a number of mosdos Torah in Yerushalayim, revealing some of the institutions lack even the most basic security.

  1. “eight avreichim with licensed weapon”

The headline was more ominous. It conjured up a bunch of sometimes intoxicated American 18 years olds playing with pistols.

  2. And Boruch Hashem that Barack Obama is President here in the United States and not in Israel or else he would have immediately instituted an executive order banning all avreichim from carrying firearms!

  3. ‘Does anyone know if a gun is muktzah? or can it be carried without an eruv?’
There is an Eruv surrounding the whole Har Nof.

  4. Does anyone know how it would be mutar to carry a weapon if the dangerous situation could be avoided in the first place. Who says that going to shule with a weaopn is better than not going at all?
I really would like to know what the heteirm may be.

  5. You cant carry muktzhe even with an eruv. However, pikuach nefesh would be doche it – yet based on what ive seen from the steipler zt’l, it would be best to use the gun bderech shinui, as he did during a war he was drafted into.

  6. I was not asking for a psak here. It looks like this question of whether to avoid the whole situation is not taken very seriously in some quarters.
It is not nogeiah to me, B”H, at least not yet, but I do not personally think that it is right to go to shule if one must carry a gun, under most situations. However, one should take this up with a qualified poseik.

  7. no number 1 – there is extensive coverage of this by Rabbi Neuwirth in “Shmirath Shabbath Kehilchatha”. I don’t recall the exact halacha in a nutshell, but you are right to seek out the Da’as Torah on how to do shomer-shabbos security.

  8. PbP, your comments reminded me of this poem:

I am not implying in any way that you are in denial about how this situation affects you. I am saying that your comments made me think.

In Germany they first came for the Communists,
    and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Communist.

Then they came for the Jews,
    and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Jew.

Then they came for the trade unionists,
    and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Catholics,
and I didn’t speak up because I was a Protestant.

Then they came for me —
and by that time no one was left to speak up.

    As far as protection:
The torah, and the chafetz chaim repeatedly tell us which type of aveiros are causing us problems. An increase in awareness of how powerful our mouths are, should have a direct affect in reducing the power of their weapons.

Let us speak up in defense of our brothers.
And in righteous indignation when the situation calls for it.
To each other, and to Hashem.
It can only help the situation!

We dare not remain silent when we are discussing bringing guns to shul.

May Hashem hear our tefillos when we are in shul, our cries when we are caring about his children, and our words when we bentch our families.

  9. Dear Folk: Please refer to Shulchan Aruch Hilchos Shabbos 329:6. If after looking at this spot you still have a question, consult your local orthodox rabbi.

If you’re still going to see this, I did not understand what your point or points were, and would like to.
