UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon addressed a Kuwait Arab economic conference expected to allocate $2 billion in recovery aid for Gaza. The UN leader stressed the need for Arab states to work to mend fences between Gaza and “West Bank areas” under the control of PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen), who lost control of Gaza in a coup orchestrated by Hamas in 2006.
The UN leader stated there can be no regional peace until “Gaza and the West Bank can renew relations”, continuing with statements condemning Israel’s actions in Gaza, adding “the occupation which began in 1967 must end” if there is to be a lasting peace in the region.
Arab leaders called Operation Cast Lead “a violation of international law” and “war crimes”, calling for actions to be taken against Israel.
A focus was placed on compelling the Arab League to work establish a working relationship between Hamas and Fatah, towards uniting the PA in Gaza and Ramallah. There were also calls labeling Abu Mazen ‘persona non-grata’, accusing him of abandoning the Gaza community during Operation Cast Lead.
