20:33 IL: IDF Spokesman Brig.-Gen. Avi Benayahu announced on Sunday evening that IDF reservists are operating inside Gaza, giving a first indicator that the counter-terrorism offensive is entering the third phase.
Tens of thousands of reservists have been activated with emergency orders and during the past week, they have undergone pre-operational exercises to sharpen their skills, calibrate weapons and prepare them for combat.
The military has explained the introduction of large numbers of combat reservists will signal the third phase, permitting the IDF to enter deeper into Hamas-controlled areas towards achieving the objective of halting rocket attacks in southern Israel.
It should be pointed out however that Benayahu did not state this is the third phase and when asked directly, he responded “I do not know what the second phase is so I cannot answer”.
