NYC: Extremely Cold Conditions Until Friday, Wintry Mix Of Snow, Freezing Rain And All Rain Saturday To Sunday


coldAn extremely cold air mass and strong northwest winds will develop and usher into the region today through Friday. Wind chills will be well below zero beginning this evening. A low pressure system will bring a combination of all snow, wintry mix, freezing rain and all rain beginning Saturday evening and tapering off Sunday evening. A respite from the below freezing temperatures on Sunday. However, the temperatures will fall again to below freezing beginning Monday.

CENTRAL PARK:
Temperature = 15 Degrees
Wind Speed = W15 G24 MPH
Wind Chill  = 0 Degrees

LAGUARDIA AIRPORT:
Temperature = 16 Degrees
Wind Speed = W17 G23 MPH
Wind Chill  = 0 Degrees

JOHN F. KENNEDY AIRPORT:
Temperature = 17 Degrees
Wind Speed = W22 G28 MPH
Wind Chill  = 0 Degrees

PRECIPITATION AND TIMING

· Snow may develop Saturday afternoon but it is more likely to begin before the evening rush hour.
· Snow will transition to a wintry mix or freezing rain by Saturday evening before midnight.
· All rain will begin Sunday morning sometime before 9AM.
· The rain will continue throughout the day Sunday and will begin to taper off Sunday evening.
· There is a chance of a brief wintry mix or all snow at the back end of this system developing Sunday evening with little to no accumulation.
· The timing of the transitions are still very uncertain at present time.
· Total snow accumulation expected is approximately 2 inches.
· There is a chance the boroughs of the Bronx and Manhattan could obtain 3 inches of snow.
· Total ice accumulation possible is one tenth of an inch.
· Less than ¼ of total liquid accumulation anticipated.
· If the changeover to all rain is sooner there is a chance of ½ of an inch of liquid accumulation.

WINDS

· Today: Northwest 16 MPH to 25 MPH with gusts up to 36 MPH.
· Tonight: West 20 MPH to 23 MPH with gusts up to 34 MPH.
· Friday: West 16 MPH to 21 MPH with gusts up to 32 MPH.
· Friday night: West 5 MPH to 8 MPH becoming calm after midnight.
· Saturday: Light south wind increasing to 6 MPH to 11 MPH in the morning.

TEMPERATURES (High/Low)

· Today: High 22 degrees. Wind chill values between zero and 5 degrees
· Tonight: Low 4 degrees. Wind chill values between -5 and -15 degrees.
· Friday: High near 17 degrees. Wind chill values between -5 and -15 degrees.
· Friday night: Low around 5 degrees.
· Saturday: High near 30 degrees.
· Saturday night: Low around 30 degrees.

· Minor urban flooding in low lying and poorly drained areas can be expected if the transition to all rain begins sooner.
