The National Weather Service is warning that subzero temperatures and strong winds are creating dangerous wind-chill values across upstate New York.
The weather service has posted wind-chill warnings throughout the state until mid-morning on Monday. In central and northern New York, forecasters say northwest winds gusting up to 35 miles per hour will produce wind-chill readings as low as 40 below zero. That’s cold enough to cause frostbite on exposed skin in less than 15 minutes.
Extreme cold is also expected in western New York, with temperatures plunging to 15 below zero early Monday with wind-chill values of 35 below.
Blowing and drifting snow will also continue to create locally hazardous travel conditions.
