Rabbi Yehuda Glick’s Son Arrested on Har Habayis

glickHillel Glick, 19, was detained by police on Har Habayis on Sunday, 26 Shevat after admonishing Arabs youths who were playing soccer on the holy site. According to eyewitnesses, Glick told a number of Arab youths who were playing soccer that they are forbidden from doing so.

Police tell a different story, stating Rabbi Glick’s son was arrested for failing to adhere with regulations governing visits to Har Habayis. Police detained him for three hours without permitting him to notify his parents or others regarding his whereabouts.

Rabbi Yehuda Glick, the father, was gravely wounded in an assassination attempt against him related to his Har Habayis activism. B’chasdei Hashem he recovered from multiple gunshot wounds and has since been released from Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Yerushalayim.

  1. for failing to adhere with regulations governing visits to Har Habayis – Which he shall be having a reminder thereof during Parshas Poro just under 4 weeks from now.

  2. @147, Where in Parahas Parah does it speak about the part of Har Habayis that Herod added on to the original? (Which, contrary to what YWN implies at the end of every HH article, does not carry a chiyuv kares, and that’s according to ALL poskim). Now, no doubt there is a לא פלוג and most of our gedolim forbid one to go there, but let’s try not to purposely mislead the niive by hinting that one who goes up is chayiv kares.

  3. #1 147 – correct, including the differences between Machane Kehuna (which on the Har HaBayis is the Makom HaAzara) and Machane Levi’a (which is the remainder of the Har HaBayis). Not to mention the portion added by Hurdus (Herod), which may only have the Halacha of Machane Yisrael.

FYI, a Tamei Meis is only not allowed in the Machane Kehuna. There are other types of Tumah that prevent one from entering the Machane Levi’a, but these can be removed in our times as well using a Mikva (though the prep is much more than what’s done for an Erev Shabbos dunk – you’re dealing with a d’oraisa and chiuv Kares, after all).

  4. The legendary Brisker gaon, Rav Yehoshua Leib Diskin, was an awe-inspiring figure. It was well-known in Yerushalayim Shel Ma’alah that when he davened on leil Shabbos and reached the words “lefonov na’avod beyirah vofachad,” a vein in his forehead would begin throbbing. His face would turn the color of fire and he would tremble. The people of the Holy City would avert their eyes, unable to look at the holy countenance aflame.

Yet, this same very angelic figure would be overcome by awe when he approached the Kosel, barely able to articulate his tefillos because of his reverence for the sacred site. In fact, a window of his humble home faced the Kosel and the Har Habayis. He was so sensitive to the kedushah and churban evidenced by the view that he always kept that window covered, lest he catch a glimpse of the holy site and be overcome.

  5. many of the Rishonim were under the impression that the Kotel is the wall of the Azara, and not the Har HaBayis; that’s why they hold that anywhere beyond that is an Issur Kares, since we’re all Tamei Meis at this point. That view has been clearly and demonstrably shown to be in error based on the digging around the area; accordingly, virtually all modern Poskim hold that one can go to the Kotel without going to a Mikva (there are exceptions – Rav Chaim Zimmerman Z”L’s psak was that we need to be choshesh for the Kotel being a wall of the Azara, or for it having been moved over the generations; for that reason, his female descendants do not visit the Kotel until they are married, and some only once a month even then).

  6. Rav Aviner: Why Chareidi Gedolim Don’t Speak About the prohibition of Going to Har Habayis
    (Monday, February 2nd, 2015)

avinerHaRav Shlomo HaKohen Aviner Shlita was asked about Jews visiting Har Habayis. The rav explained there are rabbonim who permit it under certain conditions while others do not, adding those who do not are gedolei hador and even among rabbonim one must realize there are differences. He added the Chief Rabbinate of Israel opposes it and that is what defines the issue.

Rav Aviner adds that when HaGaon HaRav Hershel Schachter of Yeshiva University was asked, he explained as a rav in the United States he will not responsd but pointed out the Chief Rabbinate of Israel prohibits it.

“Neturei Karta and Agudas Yisrael do not listen to the Chief Rabbinate, just the dati’im, just the nationalists and if we do not do as instructed, this will lead to the collapse of the Chief Rabbinate of Israel”. Rav Aviner explains that HaGaon HaRav Moshe Feinstein ZT”L teaches us that one rav cannot give a psak for another, “and the Rav from Minsk does not become involved in matters pertaining to the Rav of Pinsk”.

The chareidi rabbonim do not speak about the prohibition of visiting Har Habayis because it is understood. “Once when someone asked HaGaon HaRav Elyashiv ZT”L about going to Har Habayis he responded ‘chas v’sholom’ and the gabbai responded ‘you ask such questions to the rav, dealing with kores’. Rav Elyashiv responded ‘even if there isn’t kores, לא יטמאו את מחניהם אשר אני שוכן בתוכם”.

Rav Aviner continues, explaining shortly after Har Habayis was liberated the Steipler ZT”L published a notice citing the severity of violating the prohibition regarding Har Habayis. Rav Aviner adds that the Steipler’s talmidim gathered the signatures of leading chareidi poskim. as it was about to be printed it went to the Chief Rabbinate and then they said the printing was no longer necessary since the prohibition was already issued. (אורחות רבנו א שכד-שכח)

Hence concludes Rav Aviner, visiting Har Habayis is an affront to both the Chief Rabbinate of Israel and Gedolei Yisrael.

The rav concludes that visiting Har Habayis results in blurring the various levels, adding Rav Tzvi Yehuda Kook taught about preserving and maintain the “binyan shalem” created by HKBH; Am Yisrael and Eretz Yisrael, all levels. “There is a life-threatening danger when the various areas are blurred, blurring the levels of kedusha. When Miriam compared the level of Moshe to the other prophets it was a burring of levels and an avreira of comparing smaller to the larger”.
