The IDF cleared for publication an operation in which the navy worked with the ISA (Israel Security Agency – Shin Bet) and intercepted a boat carrying munitions supplies for Hamas to Gaza. The actual interception of the vessel took place on January 19, 2015 during the early morning hours.
The vessel carrying liquid fiberglass left Sinai for Gaza with three Gazans on board; Muhmad Bahar, Ahmed Tzidi and Awad Tzidi.
ISA officials report the suspects in custody admitted during interrogation that the cargo was intended for Hamas’ military wing to continue the manufacture of rockets and mortar shells. They also provided detailed information pertaining to the Gaza-Sinai marine smuggling route and how Hamas uses the services of Gaza fishermen and smugglers to advance its cause.
The report adds that Hamas’ military wing operates a black market operation, smuggling in goods for Gazans which are sold illegally to profit the terror organization.
Israeli security officials believe Hamas is stepping up smuggling efforts via the water channel as Egypt has sharply increased its anti-smuggling efforts from Sinai to Gaza by land.
