Cuomo Administration Plans Unpaid Tax Crackdowns

cuoThe Cuomo administration is proposing new measures to press people to pay their taxes, including lowering the threshold of debt for suspending someone’s driver’s license.

Tax officials say the suspension program begun in 2013 has been “enormously successful,” generating $125 million in collections so far from nearly 14,000 delinquent taxpayers.

They estimate that lowering the threshold would affect another 11,000 delinquent taxpayers and bring in $9 million more in revenue in the coming year and $3 million annually after that.

They also propose recovering about $80 million of “inappropriately claimed” property tax exemptions under the state’s STAR program.
