Poll: Kahlon Leads in Treasury Race


kahA poll commissioned by the Knesset Channel was carried out by Panels Politics. The poll shows that Kulanu party leader Moshe Kahlon leads the candidates to become Israel’s next finance minister.

Kahlon received 23% followed by Labor candidate Professor Manuel Trajtenberg with 20%, Yair Lapid with 10%, Yisrael Katz of Likud with 7%. A significant number, 40%, feels none of the persons mentioned are qualified.

  1. The position is not elected but is given out based on coalition negotiations. For a small party (under 10 seats) to get Ministry of Finance, which is rich in patronage, is rare but not unheard of.

  2. To the best of my recollection, Yair Lapid was the first Finance Minister not to come from the Prime Minister’s party (except for Moda’i under Peres but that was a Likud/Labor unity government).
