The New York City Council is renaming a pair of Brooklyn streets for the two police officers killed in an ambush last month.
Officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu were shot Dec. 20 as they sat in their car in Brooklyn.
The shooter, Ismaaiyl Brinsley, then killed himself.
He had posted on Instagram that he wanted to put “wings on pigs” and referenced Eric Garner, whose police chokehold death on Staten Island led to protests against the New York Police Department.
The shooting fractured the relationship between the police unions and Mayor Bill de Blasio. They blamed the mayor for creating an anti-NYPD atmosphere.
The unions also criticized City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito.
Mark-Viverito said Thursday that the slain officers served “with honor and courage.”
