IDF Concerns Regarding Israel’s Northern Border

nasralah.jpgWhile all efforts are being concentrated on the fighting in Gaza, IDF commanders are not forgetting the northern border for a second, with the Northern Command well-aware of the constant threat from Hizbullah, carefully monitoring and scrutinizing the situation.

Officials explain the current situation serves Hizbullah well, and terrorist leaders in Syria and elsewhere are well-aware than opening another front at this time would significantly complicate the IDF’s job as it continues efforts to eliminate the Hamas rocket-firing threat.

Last week, IDF fighter jets flew over Lebanese air space for over one hour, sending a clear message to Hizbullah leader Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah, that and threat from across the northern border would be met with an immediate and firm response.

In a recorded message released by Nasrallah on Friday, the Hizbullah leader condemned an Arab League decision to turn to the UN Security Council seeking international support, calling the response “cowardly”.

The IDF is also monitoring yet another front, the Israeli Arab population and the PA (Palestinian Authority) population throughout Yehuda and Shomron. Since the start of Operation Cast Lead eight days ago, there has been a sharp increase in Arab violence and attacks against Jewish residents and security personnel. Israel Police remains on high alert, as is the IDF operating in Yehuda and Shomron.
