The New York City Council is proposing spending $7.3 million to upgrade the police department’s bulletproof vests.
City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito announced Thursday that the plan will be part of the council’s preliminary budget for the upcoming fiscal year.
The announcement comes on the heels of a report that indicated that the NYPD was largely using outdated vests.
It also comes at a time of tension between the police and City Hall.
The police unions have accused Mayor Bill de Blasio of fostering an anti-NYPD sentiment in the city.
And they were upset with Mark-Viverito and her council colleagues for protesting a Staten Island grand jury’s decision to not indict a police officer for the chokehold death of Eric Garner.
De Blasio said he supports the vest investment.
