The Catskill Homeowners Alliance is reminding all homeowners in Sullivan County, that January 31, 2015 is the last day to redeem your property from the tax foreclosure sale. After that date Sullivan County will take title to your property.
Every year we get calls from people who missed the deadline or weren’t aware of the proper procedure to follow if their house went into foreclosure for nonpayment of taxes (County and Town, School, Water/Sewer charges, etc. ).
It is important to remind your neighbors, friends, colleagues and board members, to see to timely payment of their real property taxes. You may call the Sullivan County Treasurer’s office, at 845-807-0200, to find out if your property is included in the current tax sale proceedings.
The following are typical examples; If you paid your school taxes but not the town and county taxes, your property can still go into foreclosure.
Furthermore, even if your property was not list on the list of delinquent properties, it will go into foreclosure if the town notifies the county that some arrears aren’t paid just before the auction. In addition, if you paid one year and skipped one year, or if they allocated the payment to the current year instead of the prior year, it still can go into foreclosure under the current law.
Catskill Homeowners Alliance is currently working with professionals to amend the current law to prevent what happened last year when a property went up for auction and the owner had to pay an exorbitant amount of money to buy back his property.
The Catskill Homeowners Alliance feels that a property owner should always have the option to buy back his property before it goes to actual auction
