Former Jerusalem Mayoral Candidate Moshe Leon Joins List of Suspects in Widening Corruption Investigation

Moshe-LeonAs the Israel Police investigation into high-level government corruption continue, investigators continue making arrests in the case. Over 30 suspects have been arrested or detained for questioning to date.

Added to the list is former Jerusalem mayoral candidate Moshe Leon, who is a close associate to Yisrael Beitenu party leader Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman. This is at least the sixth suspect connected to Lieberman and his party. A number of senior party officials are among those facing indictment. Lieberman continues to insist the release of the investigation at this time is simply intended to sabotage his party in the elections.

Leon was also close to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu in the past, having served as his bureau chief during Mr. Netanyahu’s first term in office. Leon received strong backing from Lieberman in the Jerusalem mayoral race.

  1. “Leon received strong backing from Lieberman in the Jerusalem mayoral race”. True, but YWN conveniently forgets that Leon’s primary backers in Jerusalem were Deri and UTJ. His loss to Barkat was seen much more as a defeat of Deri than it was a defeat of Lieberman.
