NYCHA Repairman Allegedly Warned Of Deadly Elevator

elevator2.jpgThe city housing authority reportedly ignored warnings from an elevator mechanic about problems at a building where an accident later led to the death of a 5- five-year-old boy.

The Daily News reports NYCHA elevator mechanic Noel Roman warned of issues at the Taylor-Wythe Houses in Brooklyn for up to two years.

The paper cites internal NYCHA memos showing Roman reported mismanagement to his higher-ups, only to have them allegedly fall on deaf ears.

The Daily News also reports Roman was transferred and ordered to undergo a mental health exam.

Jacob Neuman, 5, seen above, died over the summer after jumping from an elevator, trying to escape after it became stuck between floors.

He reached the next floor, but lost his balance and fell down the shaft.

Inspectors later found problems with the elevator in the building, related to faulty maintenance.

When NY1 reached out to the Housing Authority, officials responded in a statement that they could not publicly comment on the incident and that they were cooperating with a city investigation.

The statement read in part, “NYCHA employees are encouraged through ethics and anti-corruption training to report allegations of wrong doing and mismanagement to their employer and any internal or external investigative body.”
