The NYPD says it increased security at Australian government and other high-profile sites around the city as the deadly hostage situation in Sydney unfolded.
The department says it sent resources to the Australian Consulate General’s office and Lindt Chocolate stores in New York among other locations.
The 16-hour siege in Sydney ended early Tuesday in a barrage of gunfire that left the gunman and two hostages dead.
Police Commissioner William Bratton said Monday the extra security measures were in keeping with a policy during events that could have a potential “ripple effect.”
