The frustrating hunt for parking near the Sephardic Community Center on weekday mornings will soon come to an end thanks to the good work of Assemblyman Steven Cymbrowitz (D-Brooklyn).
In September, Assemblyman Cymbrowitz wrote to the New York City Department of Sanitation and explained that the current alternate-side regulations near the Ocean Parkway center – 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. – are causing undue difficulty in a neighborhood where parking is already scarce.
He said many senior citizens attend classes at the Sephardic Community Center and cannot navigate the long walk from far-off parking spots. Residents near the center are also impacted by the lack of parking, he said.
Since adult classes generally end by 11 a.m., Assemblyman Cymbrowitz asked DOS to change the alternate-side hours from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on the entire block. He noted that Theresa Scavo, chair of Community Board 15, visited the site and was also pushing for changing the hours.
On November 12th, DOS notified Assemblyman Cymbrowitz that his request would be honored. He said it takes the city about 90 days to post the new signs.
“I’m pleased that we were able to work together and find a solution that will help everyone who attends classes at the Sephardic Community Center,” Assemblyman Cymbrowitz said.
