Haifa Mayor Committed to a Zionist Chief Rabbi in the City

haifaFollowing the petira of Haifa Chief Rabbi Shlomo Shalush ZT”L last week, Haifa Mayor Yonah Yahav announces he is committed to see to it that the rav’s replacement is a dati leumi and not a chareidi rav. Chief Ashkenazi Rabbi Shar Yashuv Cohen Shlita stepped down a number of years ago and now, the city is left without chief rabbis. The mayor explains the success seen in Yerushalayim will be duplicated in Haifa.

Deputy Minister of Education (Bayit Yehudi) Avi Wortzman on Tuesday 18 Marcheshvan visited Haifa and its educational institutions. The mayor accompanied Wortzman along with a number of other senior city officials.

The mayor had words of praise for the members of the dati leumi garin in the Hadar area of the city, calling them “an asset to the city”. The mayor expressed his hope that the dati leumi community will continue growing in the city and find its way back to the main neighborhoods of the city.

Like Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat, Yahav announced in his reelection campaign that the city’s next chief rabbi will come from the dati leumi community and he told Wortzman he plans to make good on that promise.

  1. Remarkable how the massive scandal that brought down the previous chief rabbi was hushed up

But unlike other groups ,charedim try to avoid airing others’ dirty laundry

  2. I suggest harav Yosef Carmel. He is eminently qualified and how can you pass up the chance of having a rabbi named Carmel serve as the Chief Rabbi of Haifa? 🙂

  3. About Time says: What kind of nonsense post is that? Par for what course? Chareidim don’t have a monopoly on Torah. Haifa is far more of a dati leumi city among its Frum population. It’s arrogant to think that only Chareidim are qualified.
