High-Level Visits But Rockets Continue to Fly

kassam.jpgSouthern area residents on Tuesday were privileged to host three high-level visits in one day, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni and Defense Minister Ehud Barak. For the most part, the greeting received by the three from residents was the same – do something to stop the rockets.

Olmert visited the Gaza belt communities and Sderot, visiting with children in a Torani school and a kindergarten in Kibbutz Gavim. “I am a partner in their fear” stated Olmert, who added, “We know what to do, and when. It will be done because the children mustn’t live in fear.”

The students shared some of their fears and emotions with the prime minister. “When I am in school learning and I hear the Color Red warning, I wonder where the rocket fell. What about abba and ima? Where are they? Are they safe? Where are my brothers and sisters? Are they okay too? We say Shir Ha’maalos and we feel much better,” explained Uriel Levy.

Sderot Mayor David Buskila was not as understanding and warm, blaming the inaction of the government for today’s current realities, an unacceptable situation which must come to an immediate end.

Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni and Public Security Minister Avi Dichter visited the Chutzot Shopping Center in Ashkelon where a rocket attack occurred in May (reported HERE on YWN). Livni stated “I am embarrassed to call what is taking place in Gaza a ‘ceasefire’. Israel must be concerned with the welfare of all her citizens and a response should have been ordered on the first day after the first rocket.”

The two ministers also visited newly-elected Mayor Benny Vaknin, who gave them a briefing regarding the city’s preparedness in the event of an escalation in attacks chas v’sholom.

In an amazing decision, Defense Minister Ehud Barak on Tuesday opened Gaza crossings, permitting trucks to deliver supplies to Gaza residents, explaining that the “relative quiet in Gaza” permits the humanitarian move. In addition, fuel trucks carrying diesel fuel for Gaza electric generators were also permitted to make deliveries.
