De Blasio and Union to Protest Day Care Center Cuts

City Hall – Tomorrow, NYC Councilmember Bill de Blasio will join District Council 1707, parents, and child advocates to protest ACS’s recently announced plan to reduce the capacity of its subsidized day care centers for low-income families by 18%.  ACS’s day care centers are important community institutions and the plan could lead to the closing of entire centers due to loss of funding.

ACS has a record of moving to reduce capacity in individual day care centers because of low enrollment, although its system for tracking enrollment and attendance is insufficient, and there are waiting lists of families in need of child care.  ACS’s hasty actions in this new plan will make an already difficult situation worse.  Cutting classrooms and funding will destabilize these centers, making safe and affordable day care less accessible.
