Bratton: Departing NYPD Chief To Be Replaced Soon

bratNYPD Commissioner William Bratton says a replacement for high-ranking official who quit abruptly will be announced Wednesday.

Chief Philip Banks III was to have been named first deputy commissioner. Instead he announced his retirement Friday.

The Daily News reports that Bratton said Saturday Banks’ replacement would be announced Wednesday. He said he was confident his choice would be warmly received.

Banks was the department’s highest-ranking black official, and some activists have said his replacement should be black or Latino.

The Rev. Al Sharpton said at his weekly rally Saturday that the most important thing is for Banks’ replacement to pursue the right policies.

Sharpton said he doesn’t just want blacks and Latinos in senior positions, he wants “the right blacks and Latinos.”
