Coinciding with the third yahrzeit of Rebbetzin Batsheva Kanievsky, Ner Echad, a new global Jewish women’s movement, has launched this Succos to honor the Rebbetzin’s memory and perpetuate her legacy. The Rebbetzin devoted herself to bringing together Jewish women from all walks of life in unified mitzvos and acts of loving-kindness, strengthening the bonds that tied them to their faith and to each other. When she passed away in 2011 she left behind a void that has yet to be filled—until today. The Ner Echad movement brings back some of the Rebbetzin’s famed Ahavas Yisroel, while simultaneously making it possible for all of us to have a small part in continuing her holy work.

The Ner Echad launch has been met with tremendous enthusiasm. The New York team has been inundated with hundreds of phone calls, and people from dozens of different cities around the world have already signed up. As the Ner Echad movement picks up speed and its membership grows, many more features bringing women together will be added. Ner Echad events in cities across America and across the world are also being planned.
What Is Ner Echad?
Ner Echad is Jewish women around the globe helping other Jewish women. Every Friday and erev Yom Tov before sunset, thousands of members welcome Shabbos and Yom Tov together as part of one massive group, lighting candles while simultaneously praying for family, friends, and each other, and contributing one dollar in unison to a common tzedakah cause. They also join together in a variety of groups to accomplish good deeds as a collective. The achdus is a source of blessing and strength to the women of Ner Echad, and to all Jewish women everywhere in the world.

How does Ner Echad work?
Features of the unique Ner Echad program include a weekly notification of candle-lighting time in members’ local area, and the name of a fellow member to have in mind in prayers that week. All dollars are automatically collected each Erev Shabbos and Yom Tov at the exact same moment—candle-lighting time in Jerusalem, the spiritual center of the world—making it one tremendous, unified act of charity. The dollars go 100% exclusively to the Batsheva Kanievsky Widow and Children’s Fund. The monies raised will enable Rav Chaim Kanievsky, and his daughter, Rebbetzin Leah Kolodetsky, with the input of a specially appointed beis din, to continue to support Israel’s neediest women and children, those who depended on Rebbetzin Kanievsky’s financial support before her sudden and untimely passing.

As Rav Chaim Kanievsky declared: “Never before in the history of the Jewish people have thousands of women joined together week after week in the method developed by Ner Echad, to light Shabbos candles, pray for each other, and give charity in unison, as a distinct group. This massive spiritual force will certainly generate a wellspring of spiritual and material blessing, and create an enormous protective shield for the entire Jewish nation.”

1) Is there a letter from Rav Chaim or from his daughter attesting to their support of this?
2) I think the negative tone in the beginning of the video – that many have become disconnected and don’t care for those who dress differently and/or think differently than they do – is more than just not necessary. It is distasteful. Hateful. Judgmental. It could have been left simply that the Rebbetzin built bridges. That the Rebbetzin cared for so many. . . The second point makes we really wonder if Rav Chaim really supports this group and their methods or if they are just using her name.
I was hoping and praying for a meaningful women’s organization in memory of Rebbetzin Kanievsky to come up. I am happy my prayers have been answered. I signed up as a member. I am convinced that the achdus that this organization will bring will have a powerful affect on the world, consciously and otherwise, and bring tremendous bracha into the world.
Wow! This is amazing! Rebbetzin Kolodetsky told me about it when I visited with her Chol Hamoed Succos. She was very excited about this project in memory of her mother, the late Rebbetzin. Now that I’m back home and looked at the website I can’t believe they already have such a sophisticated program in place with so many wonderful features. Kol Hakovod! May the Rebbetzin be a meilitz yesharah for all the women of Klal Yisrael.

I am so happy I saw this post! I read about this on Sukkos in one of the popular magazines, I think it was an Ami interview with Rebbetzin Kolodetsky, but then I left the magazines where I was staying! I was so happy to see that the Kanievsky family was starting a project in the Rebbetzin’s memory. Thanks to the Yeshiva World post I was able to check it out and sign up as a member of the movement. Beautiful work!! By the way – I saw in one of the papers a photo of Rav Chaim signing the declaration for this movement. I’m totally sold 🙂

As a member and employee of Ner Echad I can attest that this was Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky’s idea and Rebbetzin Kolodetsky is obviously also in support of the organization.
