Religious schools are calling on officials in the Ramat HaNegev Regional Council to reschedule a planned memorial march for David Ben-Gurion which is scheduled to take place on Shabbos. They explain such a move does not honor his memory, prevents the Shomer Shabbos students from participating, and contradicts Ben-Gurion’s own policy of trying to respect the Shabbos in his public capacity.
Council officials do not seem overly receptive, stating a weekday event would result in a smaller turnout, seemingly not bothered by the fact that frum pupils and residents alike are unable to take part it the Shabbos event.
