In his comments to the media ahead of Yom Kippur, IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Benny Gantz stated the IDF’s victory in Operation Protective Edge was absolute, adding the military operation restored Israel’s deterrence and therefore he opposes retaking Gaza.
The IDF commander praised his troops, explaining he will recommend a campaign ribbon for soldiers who took part in the military operation. He rejected the criticism of the IDF and the military’s conduct, praising the exemplary performance of his forces.
Regarding the harsh criticism from residents of Gaza border communities and southern areas, Gantz admitted the IDF should have protected them better.
He expressed profound disappointment over the talks surrounding defense budget cuts, particularly criticism of salaries of career officers. “It is as if nothing happened this summer” he exclaimed, standing firmly in support of his officers. He warned that if the IDF must be able to keep the quality people on board to maintain it standard of operations.
