Record Breaking Day at Ben-Gurion International Airport

elalSunday 4 Tishrei 5775 was a record breaker at Ben-Gurion International Airport with 531 takeoffs and landings. 70,000 travelers passed through the airport including many returning to Israel from Uman. Officials add more people traveled this year for Rosh Hashanah because many were compelled to skip vacation this summer due to Operation Protective Edge.

Traffic increased during the afternoon hours as over 20 flights were backed up, reportedly due to air traffic congestion over Cyprus. Air traffic control officials in Cyprus report the day was a record-breaker for Mideast travel, not just to Israel.

The traffic was also felt by the many motorists who waited in line to drop off departing passengers along with the drivers who were leaving parking lots after picking up arriving passengers. Many drivers waited outside the airport until passengers notified them that the flight has landed. The waiting vehicles outside the airport also led to congestion on area approach roads leading to Ben-Gurion. Departing flights were delayed in some cases for as much as 90 minutes.

  1. And this is before the עולי רגל to the בית המקדש. Can you imagine what ירושלים would look like when the BP double parkers along with the Israeli drivers all converge on ירושלים all at once!
