The Pentagon program that distributes military surplus gear to local law enforcement agencies got a lot of attention — and criticism — in the aftermath of the militarized police response to protesters in Ferguson, Missouri.
Even police departments that the Justice Department has censured for civil rights violations can apply for and receive lethal weaponry under the program.
This lack of communication between two parts of the federal government adds to questions about a program already facing an Obama administration review.
The Pentagon says it will review its relationship with the Justice Department to ensure that high-powered weaponry and armored vehicles do not flow to the untrustworthy.
