Police are stepping up patrols around the Solomon Schechter School after swastikas and a hate slogan were discovered scrawled on the Jewish day school’s kindergarten wall.

“We’re working closely with the school and, given the nature of this incident, we’re paying particular attention to the area,” Deputy White Plains Public Safety Commissioner Daniel Jackson said today.

According to a police report, a groundskeeper discovered the graffiti, along with a damaged wooden fence – the day after the 70th anniversary of “Kristallnacht,” when massive violence toward Jews and their property erupted in Nazi Germany.

Police said the fence was pushed in, causing about $500 worth of damage. Empty beer bottles were also found strewn in the area.

The incident is being investigated as a bias crime, police said.

Officials at the school had no comment but, in an e-mail to parents yesterday, Headmaster Elliot Spiegel said that “disturbing graffiti” was found on the kindergarten building.

“We immediately reported it to the police, who came to the school to investigate, and we then removed the graffiti,” the e-mail said. Spiegel also noted that police are stepping up security.
