The New York City Police Department is scheduled to release details Thursday about its pilot program for equipping officers with body cameras.
A federal judge ordered the department to test the cameras after ruling police were acting unconstitutionally by stopping and frisking a much larger percentage of blacks and Latinos.
Public Advocate Letitia James has been a vocal supporter of the cameras, saying they will increase transparency and accountability while helping departments improve protocol.
The number of cities using body cameras has grown rapidly in recent years as the technology has improved, but the ACLU says they’re worried that they could be another means for the government to invade citizens’ privacy.
