After examining the evidence in the case and hearing the rabbi’s version of the events, the state prosecutor has decided to move ahead with a criminal indictment against former Chief Rabbi Yonah Metzger, who will face a number of charges including tax evasion and accepting bribes.

Israel Police submitted its investigation to the prosecutor’s office about a half a year ago with a recommendation to move ahead with an indictment. Police established the rabbi accepted millions of shekels in illegal funds over the years in his post, money that influenced decisions and led to him assisting contributors. According to police, money was used to influence the rabbi in many areas including giyur and rabbinical appointments.
