According to reports, an agreement has been reached between former Rishon L’Tzion Rabbi Shlomo Amar Shlita and Rabbi Aryeh Stern Shlita regarding the upcoming election for new chief rabbis of Jerusalem. Rabbi Stern, who is the dati leumi community’s candidate, is seeking to become the next Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of the capital. Despite the widespread reports, officials in Rav Amar’s office deny any such deal; emphasizing Rabbi Amar does not aspire to become a chief rabbi of Yerushalayim.
According to the details of the deal that were released, the deal enjoys the backing of Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat as well as the dati leumi community. If the reports are accurate, the deal will all but eliminate any chance for Rabbi Eliyahu Schlesinger Shlita, who was the candidate of Maran HaGaon HaRav Yosef Sholom Elyashiv ZT”L. Rabbi Schlesinger feels he should be the next Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of the capital. He currently serves as the Chief Rabbi of the Gilo neighborhood as well as posek for the Jerusalem Religious Council.
What is yet to be determined is how Shas will react to the deal for Shas cut ties with Rav Amar when the latter did not support the candidacy of Rabbi Yitzchak Yosef Shlita in his bid to become the next Rishon L’tzion.
