A well-known official in Iran is calling for a military strike against Israel to prevent an Israeli offensive against Tehran, the daily Haaretz reports, based on a closed foreign diplomatic event held in London two weeks ago. The forum mainly addressed the possibility of an Israeli military attack against Iran.
Dr. Seyed G. Safavi, who heads the Research Institute of Strategic Studies in Iran is calling for the preemptive strike, but admits at present, such a move has not been incorporated into Iran’s policy.
Safavi stressed that Iran’s nuclear program is for peaceful use only, adding a fatwa (Islamic religious decree) was recently released prohibiting the use of WMD (weapons of mass destruction) but the fatwa is yet to be publicized.
Safavi also reports that he believes the sanctions imposed against Iran by the international community have reached their end and he is confident that even if the sanctions are stepped-up, they will have little impact on Iran.
