Georgette Breland had approached the city requesting that a section of the Oakridge Cemetery be consecrated for Jewish burials because at the present time there is no cemetery in Deadwood where Jewish people can be buried. A rabbi must bless the ground for a Jewish cemetery, Breland noted. The commission voted to set aside a section of the cemetery with more than 200 burial sites in it for the Jewish section.
Breland told the commission that plans call for a rabbi to consecrate the ground on September 24. Breland added that the ground must be consecrated by a rabbi in order for the ground to be used as a Jewish cemetery. Breland invited the commission to attend the consecration if the section was set aside.
The commission then voted to approve the setting aside of the Jewish Section in Oakridge Cemetery.
