The New York City agency that enforces consumer-protection laws is making changes aimed at reducing fines on small businesses.
Department of Consumer Affairs Commissioner Julie Menin tells the Wall Street Journal the agency wants to encourage business owners to comply without burdening them with large fines.
She says the changes will not have an impact on consumers.
Menin says repeat violators will be fined.
The agency plans to issue warnings instead of fines for a number of violations including for not having the agency’s license number on all printed materials.
Fine amounts also will be reduced. They now range from $1,000 to $10,000. Under the changes, they’ll generally range from $250 to $1,200.
