Police Try Diplomacy in Akko

mishtara22.jpgIsrael Police Northern District Chief Shimon Koren met on Shabbos with Akko’s Arab leaders in the hope of calming the situation in the racially divided city following the start of widespread rioting on Yom Kippur. The police chief met with the city’s Jewish leaders on motzei Shabbos.

Since violence erupted on Yom Kippur, police have maintained an increased presence in the city but pockets of violence and isolated incidents have been reported since Yom Kippur.

Koren is calling for “tolerance and understanding” from both sides as his troops maintain a conspicuous presence in the hope of averting renewed widespread unrest.
