Report: Police Arresting More Scammers Who Jam MetroCard Machines, Sell Illegal Swipes

nypdsPolice are arresting more scammers who jam up MetroCard vending machines and then try to sell illegal swipes through the turnstiles.

According to the Daily News, the crackdown has led to 260 arrests for criminal tampering so far this year, a 45 percent increase from the same period last year.

It’s not clear where the scammers are getting the cards they use to sell the swipes, but the Daily News says the transit authority loses tens of millions of dollars a year to illegal swipes and farebeaters.

It also says the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and the New York City Police Department are looking into a plan that would force vandals to pay for the damage they cause to MetroCard machines.

It would not be hard to trace using the serial numbers on the cards.

Also, the scammers can buy 4 monthly cards and alternate every 18 minutes with another one.
