Minister Ayalon Saved from Being Arrested in Holland

ayalon.jpgMinister-without-Portfolio Ami Ayalon was saved from being placed under arrest in Holland in May of this year. Israel used discreet diplomatic channels to save the cabinet minister from being taken into custody,

Ayalon was sent to Holland as a government representative taking part in an event marking Israel’s 60th anniversary. The visit became public knowledge and a pro-Arab human rights organization representing a man named Khaled el-Shami, who reports he was tortured by the Shin Bet in 1999 and 2000, during the tenure of Ayalon as head of the intelligence service. The organization took legal action against Ayalon, leading to Israel taking quick action, working via diplomatic channels between Israel and Holland to ensure the minister would not be placed under arrest.

Ayalon was apparently unaware of the incident and completed his mission and returned home. Only two days following his arrival was he briefed regarding what had transpired while he was in Holland.

Ayalon’s office released a statement to the media. “I am proud of my actions against terrorism throughout my career, including my tenure as director of the Shin Bet.
