Jerusalem mayoral hopeful Arkadi Gaydamak was a news item on Monday, but not in a positive way. The trial opened against him and other defendants in France, addressing his sale of $800 million in military armaments to Angola in the 1970s. the Russian-made military hardware was sold in violation of an embargo that was in place at the time.
According to Gaydamak, the sales were made directly from Russia to Angola, without and French involvement whatsoever, bypassing the embargo.
In response to the media splash surrounding the opening of the trail, Gaydamak stated “I stopped the civil war in Angola. Today, Angola is the major supplier of oil to Israel, to Haifa refineries”.
