(FINAL DECISION UPDATED IN EXTENDED STORY) Tomorrow, Tuesday, is the final day for one to join the list of candidates running in the 11 November mayoral race in Yerushalayim. Nevertheless, Aryeh Deri has not yet decided if he will appeal the Jerusalem District Court ruling barring him from the election to the High Court of Justice.
While Deri appears undecided, even after seeking the advice of Maran Ovadia Yosef Shlita and Maran Elyashiv Shlita, the Ladaat.net website states that family members are indicating Deri decided to throw in the towel and abandon plans to appeal to the nation’s highest court.
Political analysts add that watching the events most closely is Shas leader Eli Yishai, who believes if Deri does not move ahead in the mayoral race, he will come back to Shas and challenge his leadership in the coming year.
UPDATED 10:40AM EST: Galei Tzahal (Army Radio) reported at 4:30PM that former Shas leader Aryeh Deri will not appeal to the Supreme Court and he will accept the ruling of the Jerusalem District Court barring him from running in the November 11th Jerusalem mayoral race.
