Knesset Passes Bill to Encourage More Women in Public Service Despite Strong Chareidi Opposition

gafneFrom the perspective of chareidi Members of Knesset, they have once again been left out in the cold as the Knesset on Monday, 25 Sivan, passed a bill granting political parties 15% additional funding if at least one-third of their list is women.

MK (Yahadut Hatorah) Rabbi Moshe Gafne explained that if the bill passes, one will suspect that any woman in government was not selected because of her capabilities but because the party’s treasure decided the party wants an additional 15% funding.

  1. I am always the first to point out the problems with Haredi parties, but this bill is messed up! For one thing, while quotas are sometimes necessary in order to have a more equal society, they also cause people to be accepted while they are lacking skills, just in order to make the quota. Add to this that there is no lack of women in the Knesset, and women have held almost every position available, including Prime Minister, so there is no need for additional legislation.

I am all for including women when there is a lacking, but this bill is clearly just to De-legitimize and to specifically harm Haredi parties. All other parties have a large amount of women, so don’t try to convince me that this is only for “equality”. If the Haredi parties don’t want to hold primaries or have women in their party, that’s their choice, and it is my choice whether to vote for them or not. And you can claim that not having primaries is not democratic, but just remember that Yesh Atid also did not have primaries.
